4 December 2008 – Belarus is likely to benefit from the new Eastern Partnership initiative of the European Commission Yesterday the European Commission officially announced its new initiative that will enforce cooperation between the EU and its Eastern neighbours – namely, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. The Eastern Partnership contains a number of components that are designed to contribute to the social, economic, and political development of the six countries. Although Belarus has been preliminarily named as an eligible country, it is still not clear to what extent it will be able to participate in the Eastern Partnership and benefit from its components. The European Commission plans to decide on the involvement of Belarus in the new initiative at the Eastern Partnership Summit in April 2009.
